Seiko New Releases

Curious, @Dsloan , what are the issues with the 4R36 movement? Just based on what I've read, the overall specs on it seems like it's not the most accurate (I think +45 seconds/day rated officially?) but I've also seen multiple anecdotes/reviews saying that real world performance for random samples is much better.

On a tangential note, for less expensive movements like this, do people bother taking them in to get regulated outside of normal service intervals? If a watchmaker will take a little bit of money just to do a regulation even when the watch is pretty new, that might be worthwhile.

It's the inaccuracy and the low power reserve. But, don't get me wrong - I really enjoy these watches and understand that they perform fine for the price point.

I suppose I could always pick up a timegrapher and do some regulation at home instead of complaining 😁.

I want to like the speedtimer (seeing those fractional second hands zip around is really fun!)

But it really bothers me that they didn't design the hour hand to function with the chronograph. I like using my chronographs and not being able to time things over an hour bothers me.

What do y'all think

Some new Grand Seiko dials for fans of Japanese swordsmithing. Supposed to symbolize the hard outer edge, the resilient inner core, and the heat used to forge katanas.

Looks cool, but I think the pink / Sakura color is still my favorite.

Out of those 3 I think I like the red the best. The power reserve gauge on the others seems a little too jarring IMO.

Didn't these come out several years ago? Or am I missing something?

Whoops, you're right! Must have misread whatever article I pulled it from.

Love the dials on the king seiko.

it’s hard to keep up with all the new releases from seiko. Easy to get mixed up. I do like those new grand seikos. The red dial is very nice. Wait, I don’t think I have a red dial. Oh no.

I really like what Grand Seiko is doing with their dials. I just wish they would get rid of the power reserve indicator. I like this Evolution 9 Collection that has lost the power reserve indicator. The dials are amazing but the hands seem mismatched to me. The hour hand seems too wide and out of place. Would love to have a spring drive some day.

It does look striking. Perfect thing to wear after a long hot day at the katana forge.

If I had the money, I'd just get a drawer full of spring drive models and pick a dial color and texture to match my mood.

Dang, I'd gotten used to the power reserve just being part of their design identity, but that really does look nice. I think you're right that it's an unnecessary interruption.

I’m think the power reserve has its place but I noticed on some seiko related forums it created quite a division in appeal. I have been in “love” with the work seiko does on its GS dials since they came out. I like the unique dials. One reason I picked the railmaster with the textured dial. Although not seiko related

I just actually read the description of the watch I posted and see they moved the power reserve to the back of the movement visible through the display case back. That's pretty cool. I just don't like how it breaks up the dial. That new red dial is really cool though.

They're very nice though, easily on the same level or better-looking than the current crop of Alpinist models, although I'm not a fan of fake-aged lume.

Agree with your pro's above, it has the vintage Seiko 'look' in spades.
My one is bang on accurate after 3 days it's only lost 1 second, I'm frankly amazed by that so movement wise it's good.
I was worried about the dinky crown but I didn't have any issues setting the time it day / date, maybe I have small fingers...
My only niggle is that the bracelet is a bit of a hair puller, I've seen a YouTube where a guy sticks a strap code super J on it and it looks great so I might try that.
Overall, super happy.😀

Good to hear. These seem to sell out on seconds everywhere and every time they're restocked but I grabbed one -- I think! -- at last today and looking forward to it.

My most recent Seiko experience was another great-looking Prospex with 6r35 that ran so far out of spec that it had to be sent back twice for repairs / movement swaps, so hopefully the 36s run a bit better.

I did have a chance to purchase (I passed) on the 093 -- pretty, but it's just under CAD 5k here and honestly I preferred my old MM300 overall -- not least for the movement, but also for its more precise feel on the wrist, heavy and thick though it is.

I think you'll enjoy wearing it. An update, I wore it for nearly 3 weeks straight on the original bracelet and the pulling issue went away, maybe pulled all the hair out😁, seriously though, super comfortable and enjoyable to wear.

I apparently just grabbed the last of five allocated to a shop near me. They say they should come in soon.

Also, splurged on a really dorky but fun LE Seiko 5 while I was there. I should have not tried to make friends with a Seiko AD. This is going to get expensive.

Now that's something new & exciting!!! I've never seen this model before. It is very Sinn-like.
