Hard to find 1983 Seiko Astronaut A829-6029-the type worn into space by Sally Ride and others in the 1980's
Cool watch and goes nicely into a Speedmaster collection
Anyone else have an Astronaut?
6019 is the blue version of the watch

25 years ago... snail mail via monthly magazine
In September 1999, I wrote a letter to our favorite monthly magazine, which was published under "Readers Write" in February 2000 and saw an answer to my question by STS Payload Specialist Charles Walker, who flew three times onboard the space shuttle, in the May 2000 issue...
My question was about those quartz chronographs seen in early to mid 1980s NASA photographs...

That's awesome! I have a couple variants of these 'rotocalls'

I wish they'd reissue these. I find them super functional and useful.

While working with Captain Readdy on his Omega X-33 Speedmaster story here, he was kind enough to share these photographs of his 3 time flown NASA issued Seiko A829. According to him, this watch is his favorite and is the watch he continues to wear daily. As you can see it is well used and has aged well.

Notice on the clasp all three of his Shuttle missions are engraved STS-42, STS-51, and STS-79.

Seeing these is making me want another one.... I've been wearing my X33 a lot lately, but I like rotating the bezel for functions so much... And the X33 doesn't have a counter...

Ground-control to Sensei Hattori

or

Goodthings come to those who wait, especiallyin good condition for us collectors.

Quite a while ago, I noticed the contribution of @agee and the posts of @SpeedyPhill and @Dsloan with beautiful examples or the shown ad´s.

I remember - it must have been around ´73 - my first digitalwatch : bought at the German walmart "Quelle" : LCD, a huge steel-block, time, date alarm, sound and light ! Probably with stop-watch function too. Surprisingly,I later never had a G-shock, only some colorful Swatch watches, but all with “hands”.

So I came to the conclusion: My Mercedes is from ´84 - I had to lookfor the fitting watch toupgrade a car that has no electronics.

Voilà and from 1982, when the first CD (Billy Joel?) came out.

in "standard mode" time:

So: this is my summer watch 2025 👍 -> slim and water- and space-proof

cheers, Jo

I'll probably grab the yellow at full MSRP and then kick myself when the pop up 30-50% off next year.

The Reddit Seiko nerds seem divided - there are a lot of hot takes on the pricing ("I could get a solid steel g shock for that much money"). They are not wrong, but I really like the design and layout of the Rotocall, and I'm not sure how much longer my vintage ones will keep going.
