I believe a brand's status is judged by their best pieces. An example of this is the JLC Gyrotourbillon. All other JLC "time only" models benefit by association. For UG, it's largest influence are their panda Compax/Tri-Compax and Exotic dials. The brand is pretty much defined by these and their other pieces pull DNA from them; hence the brand's elevated status.

I'm not the best writer but hopefully I made some sense.

Imo, the brand became famous and appreciated with Compur and Aero-Compax....providing chronos for various air-forces. We are talking WW2 era when there was a high demand for such instruments.
Polerouter helped boost the brand again in the ‘50s.
For me these are key models and times in UG history. (Although, I like many others)

The panda Compax models came out in the ‘60s, right? By that time the brand was pretty much established imo. I do understand, however, that panda dials are now very sought after as they are very appealing to a lot of people. Therefore they helped boost the brand in the recent vintage market.


This forum is a small oasis for UG/vintage guys like me. I am very happy it exists and OF is hosting it.

Completely agree. To narrow the focus to just the early 60’s celebrity chronographs is to miss out on the overall coolness and breadth of the brand.
