Finally thinks it's time to buy a seiko watch. I haven't always been a big fan of seiko but I'm starting to change my mind. What should be my first seiko?

What is your budget. Any particular style of watch you prefer (diver, dress, etc.)?

Something in the range between the Eichi 2 and the Seiko 5 might work for you.....

Seriously, you're going to have to narrow it down if you want help. Analogue? Digital? Diver? Complicated? Vintage?

Some of the vintage Grand Seiko and King Seikos fit that bill too. Below is a GS 5646, like the one I have. (Photo shamelessly stolen from the internet as my GS is at the watchmakers).

Under $1k gets you a ton in the vtg Seiko world...hell, I thought about this gem for $195

38mm, nice patina, unpolished case...a lot to like. Throw it on a NATO and call it a day.

Well the SKX007 is a good choice, the SKX009 is a good choice... The turtle re release is a good choice... really the Seiko divers are all good.

Do you see a theme here?

Once you decide what sort of thing you want (and really, with Seiko, you could go in several directions. No one has even mentioned the chronos yet), there are some very detailed guides on the Seiko forums and sites where you can read up. For instance, here's a good introduction to the Grand Seiko models. And another one for the 6309 divers. With the chronos and older divers there is a high prevalence of aftermarket and replica parts and, especially with the SKX divers, a lot of custom modding too. Because there is much more acceptance of this among Seiko collectors than among Swiss watch fans, Seiko sellers on ebay tend to be more open about their use of non-original parts than, say, those trying to flog Omega or Longines. But not always, so it still pays to prepare.

+1 for a vintage grand Seiko or King Seiko.
+1 for the turtle re-release.
Also look at the vintage 6138s and the 6139s.
