Can the zeitwerk be considered a unique watch?

It’s not a piece unique. Nor is it rare.

But i find its digital display with mechanical movement to be an unusual combination in a commercially available wristwatch.

Just read that ZWs have a remontoir. And the remontoir in the date version is a much improved version.

Shame it’s not mine 😁

A forum friend with a ZW and a Datograph managed to persuade ALS to give a small group of us a factory tour last year. It’s an amazing experience if you ever get the chance, and at the end we had access to the whole collection to play with. If cost was no object I’d have taken that ZW in a heart beat.

Been always been intrigued by the ZW.

Promised myself it would be my second ALS after i purchased by GL1.

Then met the head of ZW when he visited Manila. Was surprised he wore a Datograph Flyback. And when i read that Dufour also wears one, made me think of getting the Datograph first. But there’s really something with the ZW. And i followed mt heart.

The wife and I went to Prague last November. She wanted a side trip to Germany. My choices were the nearby Dresden and Glashütte. Would have picked the latter so i can visit ALS but the wife’s choice prevailed. Maybe next time.

The ZW is in RG. Must be the lighting.

Ah...well it is really something. What is the thickness, if I may ask?

I believe it's 12.5 mm which is slightly shorter than a datograph but almost 3mm taller than an AL1

What? The Datograph is even thicker than a ZW? Oh well.

I have only handled a Datograph once (the one owned by the Zeitwerk head). Was not able to compare it to others.

Still thinking if i want to pursue a datograph.

Now it’s about 14mm so very top heavy and not for every wrist. Dato is a modern classic which rose dramatically in value and a visibly stunning movement/sculpture worthy to be worn caseback up. To put into content: Philippe Dufour wears one. AL&S at it’s very finest

I had the opportunity to try on a Datograph and was surprised and disappointed by how thick it was. It did not feel right to me. Good to know the Zeitwerk is a little thinner. I hope to try on a ZW sometime.

2 people I know sold it for that reason even though they loved the watch. And it’s 42mm so it’s quite a mass on the wrist
