Was thinking of going over to the dark side for a Rolex to add to my brand quest.

Would i be best getting a earlier maybe birth year 1971

Not that familiar with Rolex and was after some advice on what would be the better of the two below i have in mind at about the same price

Model: Subamriner Date
Ref #: 16610 Year: 1998

Or

Model: GMT Master II
Ref #: 16710 Year: F-serial (2004)

Any advice welcome (even if its another brand to spend the same dollars on)

Condition matters a lot, but I'd go the GMT-Master II mainly because a '98 Sub is likely Tritium had will have expired by now, while the GMT will have working luminova

You in melbourne?
Personally I prefer the first, but these type of watches have never been my thing.

Have you looked at ekelsman (I think is the name) on Elizabeth st, opposite GPO? There is also a pawn broker on flinders st, opposite the station that often has nice watches.

Also, is there any reason you are looking at bricks and mortar stores? I don't know Rolex pricing but that store is very expensive for omegas. You would be better off looking on eBay or watch recon.

Have you looked on watchuseek or The Rolex Forum?
I know nothing about rolex, so I'll bow out now.

Darwin, not much to pick from up here. Get the odd visit to Sydney but wont be going there for a while.
Browse the above forums but dont mind paying a bit more for security as said. Have bought a few watches from clockmaker.com.au
but seems to have put all hes prices up lately.

If you consider GMT Master, consider the Root beer. My favorite.

Mine too, followed by the Coke and then the Pepsi. Steve / cicindela's is really cool also.

Funny how this stuff works. Rolex became "the watch" 20 or 25 years ago and back then you couldn't practically give
away this root beer and Pepsi stuff. Nobody wanted it because it was considred toy looking. no self respecting guy in new york city would were either. lol. So, today it's more scarce and has almost become more desirable.

same thing to a certain extent with steel subs going back before my time. Nobody wanted those which is part of why they're rare and desirable.

a rolex was pretty much two things: datejust and a day date if you could afford it. today, those are the least desirable because there's no scarcity value in them.

Rolex is a fascinating study.

So unique taste today.......... valuable tomorrow..... or forgotten.
In Jakarta they called Rolex datejust two tone with gold / champagne dial: 'Rolex sejuta umat' which means Rolex for the million people.

Looks like two threads both for the root beer. Has to mean they are popular among all.😀
