Universal Geneve White Shadow "Starry Nights"

Hi All,

I've been offered UG "Starry Nights" wondering if the dial isn't fake as there's no "white shadow" text on it, as opposed to the examples I've found on the internet (photo of such example below).

Do you know if the "starry nights" model came out with the "white shadow" text as well?

There are quite a few examples of Polerouters and Golden Shadows without the nomenclature on the dial. As long as the case reference adds up, it has the correct movement and you are fine without the extra text I wouldn't stress about it. I doubt it would be big money in any case.

They came without the “white shadow” text as well. They can be found in manual wind calibers 1-42 as well as the automatics. Some just have the lapis lacquer motif while others have the same lapis motif with the star pattern.

In my view, anything with a cal 42 is not a White Shadow - they are microtor automatic movements or quartz (cal 74).

As usual with UG, there are excpetions to the rule. I used to own this White Shadow with a cal. 42.
Regrettably sold it some years back. Have never seen another example of this model.

I have loose cal 42 & 66 movements and dials - I'll check where the dial feet are later. To be clear, you are certain that somebody hasn't just broken the dial feet and taped it on? I'd also be curious to know what the case reference was/is? I agree, it's an unusual one.

No way a white shadow exists in a manual wind version. They were all auto and then quartz. You would also see 66 or 67 in the ref number, not 42. What is the ref number on the case back?

That's my starting position as well. The round dial below is a 42 - dial feet in quite different locations to the microtor so it's not just a case of somenone swapping a loose dial without breaking the dial feet.

I had a look for period advertising but most is for the premium Golden model where a lot of fuss is made of the movement. This is the best that I could do for a White.

It's a reference 866154 (serial 3642962). I bought this one from a small auction house in Geneva. The ref. indicates a cal.66 indeed. Well possible that this was put together from spares or was some kind of a prototype piece that didn't go in production. I will see if I can dig up some further pictures.

Note that unlike other White Shadow dials I'm familiar with, this one doesn't state 'Automatic' on the dial, which makes me think that the Cal.42 could have been originally paired with this dial.

The dial has a satin finish which I have rarely seen. Here's a ref.866049 with this style of dial finish which sold on Reddit a while ago:

Different question on UG starry nights - any technical information on the dial, such as material, production process etc?
