Hi guys,

very new to vintage UG. But i am looking for either compax or calendar.

Anyone can push me in the right direction in getting a great calibre/movement?

I've heard of some 283, 281..

My budget is under 3k

The Compaxes fall into two broad categories - the pre 1960 ones with in house calibers and the post 1960s with Valjoux 72s. BOth are perfectly respectable chronograph calibers. The various UG/Martel machines are essentially scaled versions of the same movement - very little practical difference among them, so asking for a Compax with a great movement is essentially the same as asking for a Compax. And there you are dealing with hundreds of references, so I'd suggest following the models a bit on the forum and elsewhere on the web to allow you to narrow it down a bit.

As for the calendar watches, they've all got the same caliber - you can chose with or without moonphase.

Thanks LouS that has been very helpful.

Are bigger sized compax's rare? like 38mm and above?

Larger Compaxes are rarer than ones in the 33-36mm range. There are some lovely 38mm ones, particularly in rose gold, and there are some monster 46mm ones - these last are extremely coveted and priced accordingly.

Ben has been accumulating these with a discerning eye lately. Let's turn to his posts for examples:

Got one that's larger than 36mm but a little smaller than 38mm.
Cal 287, ref 22536, 1945.
