Thank you guys. The western part of the country did not feel the tremors but the sorrow. I checked on the friends they are luckily safe. Things are very nasty for millions of people, living in the south east, specifically this first night. This magnitude of earthquakes in the region is not to be considered even once in a generation maybe centuries.
Almost 3k death toll in less then 12 hours, it’s going to get worse.
Unfortunately it will probably be 10x that. For a couple years I was going to Gaziantep regularly for research and I am so sad for that city, which has been trying hard in recent decades to improve quality of life through cultural, educational, and health care development - only to get hit by the refugee crisis.
Antep, like all the cities in the region is mostly made of inexpensively built reinforced concrete buildings between 3 and 10 stories, and it looks like many of them "pancaked" in the middle of the night while people were sleeping. It's very painful to see. Thousands of buildings that survived are going to be uninhabitable. And it will be worse in small towns and villages that lack the equipment and hospitals to save people or are practically cut off by the winter weather. I wouldn't be surprised if a million people are made homeless in the middle of winter. (I pray that I'm exaggerating.)
Geçmis olsun, and if members in Türkiye can recommend any worthwhile charities I'd be very grateful.
Horrifying scenes, and a very sad situation there, hope our members from there are ok. Looks like it will be a long time before the full situation is understood but its getting worse rapidly.
Indeed, my thoughts are with all the people affected. I have been in 6.8 in a well-engineered structure at that was quite scary. I hope to never experience a 7.8.
