For what it's worth -- I'd never walk up to a total stranger and try to strike up a conversation about his/her watch if the watch was a Submariner. But an Explorer? Absolutely, I would. In fact, that was my last watch conversation with a stranger: I was wearing a polar white Explorer, and he was wearing the black dial version of the same generation.
