The tick

Sorry if this is the wrong discussion forum for this thread, but it seems like, if anyone would know, it would be a watchmaker..........better yet, a group of watchmakers

I have accumulated a number of vintage watches from different makers; and in addition to the visual joy they provide on the wrist, I get a kick out of listening to the mechanisms tick way. One thing I notice is that many of the various brands include a very perceptible metallic ringing sound amidst the symphony, while others, such as the Omega watches, do not. I have wondered if this metallic ring has anything to do with quality of design and/or materials, i.e. if you can perceive significant ringing, it is a lower quality movement.

I just auditioned a few pocket watches out of my collection, and I have ended up with the impression that older watches with tempered steel hairsprings are more likely to display a ringing sound, than newer ones with non-ferrous alloy hairsprings. And the difference has nothing whatsoever to do with quality differences.
