Snow at my observatory in Southern California

I believe that would be @Jones in LA

The two roof sections are built on a 6"x6" wooden frame. Wheels support the roof structure and ride on steel rails across the outriggers. One side rides on an inverted V rail and the other on a flat rail, this keeps the sections aligned when moving. Electric winch on each side does the work.

Very cool!

Ok!, now you have my entire attention. I have been to the Palomar Mountain Observatory a few times. A great scope and not often viewed as Griffith Park.

We were up at Griffith Park a few years back just being knuckleheads. It was later in the evening, the observatory was open, so we went in to check it out. They had the scope pointed at Jupiter. We stood in line to take a peak. It was pretty cool.

I was like @tpatta doesnt live down near Palomar... There would be no snow at the SoCal Astronomers site ( not even sure it’s still there been 20+ years since I was there)

mmm I smell a great g2g at some point with perhaps camping... I’ll bring the Booze 😉

also, where’s the member around here a few months ago talking about his backyard observatory, discovering/naming a comet, etc.? seems y’all need to hang-the-f-out

We do hang from time to time, but the pandemic has messed things up for us this past year

But hang on now, your observatory is 60 miles away from your house? Is there a vacation home attached to this thing, or do you vacation in the observatory?

Hmmmm...

I might have to attach something like that to the wing that houses my harem for those nights I need something else to do.

This is the kind of thing you could start your own YouTube channel with I want you to know that. There are dudes on YouTube doing astronomy far less capable than that getting a following.
Thanks!!!!! I think I'll pass on the YouTube thing. I'm told I have a face made for radio. 😁

Actually the whole building, telescope and imaging system can be controlled remotely from my house. The drive is about 75 minutes each way and I can go up and come back the same night if I wish. I rarely do that since I really enjoy hanging out in the mountains. I have an RV up there to hang out in when needed. All the comforts one needs, including a well stocked bar. 😀

Ahhhh, tell me, isn't that how Schiaparelli saw the canals on Mars?

In truth I am very very envious.

But no canals, OK?

Life on Europa, well that's fine.

This is amazing!
I've been up to Mt. Wilson and poked around there where it says "authorized vehicles only" and that was kinda fun, but I think yours wins for sure. Do you have a schedule, like GP? 😉
