I have an old large and heavy silver watch band that I inherited many years ago. I don't wear because quite frankly it is a little too much for me; I am, however, thinking of buying an affordable watch to place on it. I am thinking of a getting a Seiko automatic. What are the opinions out there on these watches?

Seiko have a wide range of styles at virtually every price point. I've very rarely seen any criticism regarding quality or value for money.

Go for it 馃憤

Inexpensive, bulletproof good sound watches.

In spite of this being the Omega forum we've likely all got one or more of the damn things because they are so good.

You can find some on ebay for $50-70 and then order some straps from Chapestnatostraps and have endless fun with different combinations.

I have two. One was my grandfathers Seiko 5 and the other I picked up over the summer. Both reliable and comfortable. I am also looking for a 7002 for a birth year watch. I'd suggest just find a style you like and look at the seemingly infinite variations of it.

Attached is the one I picked up over the summer. And I ordered a NATO from cheapestnastostraps like @Hkolka mentioned. Fun to mix it up

That's my skx on a custom leather strap, and me wearing my girl friends Seiko 5 on a nylon NATO. Plus I have a few vintage pieces.

Great watches, bullet proof, great looking and super affordable for what you get.

If your looking for something dressier may I suggest Orient a brand owned by Seiko that makes some great watches also.

Honestly I find I wear my skx a lot, and have invested more money in custom straps for it then I paid for it.

I doubt you will find anyone on this forum that will have anything negative to say about Seiko. The only downsides are honestly unimportant, most on the affordable end do not hack or have manual winding, that's it. But the Swiss asking 10 times more and the multiple startup brands using less robust movements and asking 2 -4 times as much should be embarrassed by what you can get with Seiko and Orient. Swatch has the "revolutionary" sistem 51 watches that are well received but they are a joke when you compare them to Seiko.

Would recommend you exploring the vintage seikos. Hi-beat models are a joy to own!

If you are into the newer pieces, you can consider the green alpinist or perhaps pick up a seiko diver 007 or SKX033...

Agree with everything posted but would also add that the brand has a long interesting history with a dedicated following who provide an easily accessible data base to enable research into most individual models
This aligned with reasonable prices (when compared to other brands) can easily lead to owning more than a few

Seiko..... is synonym of good value for money, I have 6 vintage bullheads (the model that made me start this watch madness) , 2 pogues, divers, etc. Be careful buying a vintage Seiko on EBay, there is lots of frankenseikos, especially from Asia.

I've got my great-grandfather's 6117-6010 automatic GMT, which funnily I just posted a pic of in the 'Seikos!!!' thread last night! Absolutely love it; perfect size for me (about 37-38mm) and keeps great time. Not to mention the 60s styling still looks great. If you can find one I'd highly recommend it.

Do you happen to know the reference number? Really nice looking watch you have!

You won't be disappointed with a Seiko. ''just do it''..
But buy the seller 1st esp if your trolling eBay for 1. Lots of Frankensteined Seiko's on there.

Love that skx on the leather strap. That might be my next purchase combo...

Nice watch and nice band. However, I think the watch is a little lost in the forest.

You need something bigger and more retro, more like 1970s/1980s big cases with rounded sides etc.
