The only Apollo astronaut I ever met in person, and a true gentleman and hero. RIP indeed - a life well and fully lived.

RIP NASA astronaut James Lovell...
August 7, 2025 USN Capt James Lovell passed away aged 97 years.
Selected as NASA astronaut in Group 2, the Next Nine , James Lovell flew on Gemini VII, Gemini XII, Apollo 8 and Apollo 13 accumulating 29 days 19 hours in space!
NASA send its condolences to the family of Capt. Jim Lovell, whose life and work inspired millions of people across the decades.
James Lovell also served in the US military, and the Navy has lost a proud academy graduate, aviator and test pilot. Jim Lovell embodied the bold resolve and optimism of both past and future explorers, and we will remember him always.

After his NASA days Captain Lovell settled in Lake Forest, Illinois. I met him twice in the early 2000s at his son's restaurant where he would occasionally make the rounds to meet the guests. Sadly, no pics as I neglected to bring a camera, and this was the pre-smartphone days. Super nice person.
There is a hospital named after him in nearby North Chicago.
As far I'm aware his flown Speedmaster is still on display in its sealed NASA service baggie at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry in the space section there.

Wearing my -65.

US Navy Captain James Lovell, Jr., was laid to rest today at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis - Maryland. The Gemini and Apollo astronaut died August 7 at age 97. He was buried next to his wife Marilyn who passed away in 2023.
Apollo 16 LMP Charles Duke and Tom Hanks were present as James Lovell was given full military honors including a "missing man" formation jet flyover.

@Archer I can say on pretty good authority that the delay was probably scheduling of the military honor guards.

My Command, which encompass 13 states, deals with military funeral honors and whether you are an enlisted sailor, Admiral, or astronaut, and if you choose military honors, you are put in line for services regardless of rank. There are over 200+ Navy burials a week in my Command's 13 states alone and the ceremonial funeral guards are stretched thin.

It’s easy to say 97 is a nice long life but if you’re 96 you might think different.
I think Lovell was amongst the more amazing of astronauts as imo Apollo 13 has one of the most amazing stories and that “Houston we have a problem” in such a relatively calm in control voice after such a “yet unknown” devastating event is something I use to keep my mouth shut when nearing road rage or an out of control moment at work etc. He leaves behind something just as great as a work of art, great song or discovery. He gives us one of the more amazing stories of survival one can read, or “watch” for that matter.
