Real World Wrist-Checked

It almost never happens -- something I'm happy about -- but I got wrist-checked today, and it was at our local supermarket, by one of the staff.

A young checker, looked to be about 21, as I walked up with cart full of groceries, and I didn't notice but he'd spotted the PP 5167A on my wrist. This grocery store is all about customer service, and the staff are super courteous. So it already felt odd that I was the one initiating the check-out banter, "Hey there... and... how are you?"

Pointing to my wrist, "That isn't... there's no way... how did you even..." he said.

"Oh my God, you're into watches? So... how much time do we have here!" I said, in a ha-ha tone.

And in the time it took to unload the groceries and get it all checked and bagged, we had an intense watch nerd's micro-conversation, and it was delightful. Mindful of the line behind me, I handed it to him, and just watching how he held it and examined it, I could tell, this guy is most definitely afflicted!

It's one thing when it's a random encounter with some big ol' old man watch nerd with something you both know is super cool or obscure on his wrist. Something entirely more enjoyable when it's a version of former-you that you're talking to, seeing that spark, seeing him standing on square-one just like you did. And after two minutes of chatting, rooting for him to find the way to build the life to get himself there, and hoping like hell he really does. Truly a delightful conversation.

That probably made the kid's whole week. Good on you for being receptive and trusting of the man. I once had a similar encounter at a Panera Bread. The young guy behind the counter saw the clasp on my Fortis and asked if I was wearing a Rolex because of the crown. I complimented the eye for watches and explained what it was. He'd never heard of Fortis, but I showed him the nice dial and case and I like to think he went home and researched the brand. Wishful thinking? Perhaps. But the bug starts somewhere...

I was blown away at the knowledge of a McDonald's drive-thru employee when he spotted my Speedy one day...
He was very excited while filing me in on the history of it and the space program lol.
It was pretty cool.

I was in New Orleans a few years ago, and while walking down by the riverfront, wearing my Speedmaster, and young guy (maybe 16 or 17) walked past and said "Nice Speedy!" and when I turned to look he was holding up his wrist with one on as well - gave him a wave and that was it. What impressed me the most is that I was wearing it on a strap, so more difficult to spot quickly than one on a bracelet.

On that same trip, heading back at the airport, ran into a guy wearing a Panerai. I commented on it, and he looked a little embarrassed. But the people near me in line heard me say it, and they said "Hey we are one big Pamily here" and all 4 of them (parents and two children who were maybe in the early 20's) held up their wrists and were wearing various Panerai watches. Had a short conversation before the line moved on...

I was at an NAWCC convention about 20 years ago. I was wearing my 1980s Rolex Daytona Cosmograph. I was finished breakfast, and I was resting my arm on the back of the booth we were at, Daytona in plain view. Across the restaurant about 60 feet away there were several fellows just finishing breakfast. As they got up to leave, one of them walked over to our booth and asked me if the watch I was wearing was what he though it was. “Daytona”? He asked. Yes! Is it for sale? No!

I’m naive that way, but I’ll pop it off if my watch-nerdar confirms the signal that it’s safe to do so.
