Hi
I got this watch from my uncles estate. Probably belonged to grandpa who knew a watch dealer in Oslo.

The ref no tool online suggest the case is from 1956 and movement from 1957.

The Caliber is 8521 (lig 10 1/2 sc aut kal whatever that means)

The case is 34,88mm!

Its a strange mix of parts with a screw back like on the Ingenieurs with a pie pan dial without Ingenieur logo and maybe too small case. Normally would be 36mm.

Would anyone have any information for me?

Anything much appreciated.

Pictures are a bit blurry but it seems you have there a very nice 18k (0,750) cased IWC from the 50's with a pie pan dial and a pellaton cal 8521 movement. Albert Pellaton was technical director of IWC Schaffhausen from 1944 until 1966. Crown looks to be replaced. Great heirloom. Give here a service, a great brown/cognac strap (or whatever you like) and wear the heck out of it.

Do you have a straight up picture of the dial?

Nice early automatic. The crown is not correct, but everything else looks original. The cal. 85x was one of the best automatic movements made during that period.

Yes, there are similarities with the Ingenieur, but this was simply an automatic. What is most interesting is the dial, as the "IWC" above the signature was not common, and is more often associated with earlier models.

The cal. 8521 reportedly had a production run of approximately 13,200. They measure 13 lignes (not sure where you got "lig 10 1/2 sc aut kal"), which means that they measure 29mm.

The 10 1/2 lig stuff was from the dating tool found online

Welcome! I'm sorry you've lost your uncle, but he's given you something great to remember him by. I have one, and wearing it makes me feel pretty special.

I was intrigued by your assessment - can you say more about why you think this?

By the way, "sc" usually means "seconds central". You may need to get a French speaker to make a guess at "aut(omatik?) kal(iber?)"...

Well, very uneducated guesswork. Have only seen screw Backs on ingenieurs.. But the case would then be bigger I thought. The pie pan seems to be more normal with ingenieurs too? But Im only guessing

Thanks again

Plenty of IWC dress watches with that dial too - some very nice ones in both steel and gold can be seen around this forum with a bit of searching. Enjoy!

Sorry. Was busy at work. Anyway, I saw the watch on the big screen. Straight up picture not necessary anymore. Looks nice. Indeed unusual iwc logo. I love the pie pan models. I had one in the past but in stainless steel. Enjoy

Looks totally fine to me. As noted the IWC logo is unusual, which makes it interesting.

BTW, I inherited a somewhat similar IWC from my father. It's a cal 853 ca. 1960. It also has an Ingenieur-ish vibe. The dial was repainted obviously. I've been looking for a replacement for more than a decade.

Nice 8531 calibrerà watch. Not an Ingenieur as Ingenieurs had a soft iron cage for Faraday effect.
