This ref with the GM stamp show up here in the Indiana/Michigan/Ohio region from time to time. They actually seem to fetch a very slight premium around here.

How much would that have cost in 1965?

Without the bracelet a watch like that was probably in the $300 to $500 range in 1965. A lifetime of service with a company often meant a gold watch at retirement. Today prices are way too high for a company to give gifts like that out, plus the value has to be added to an employees wages for tax purposes so it is now messy. Most people wouldn't want a $15,000 PP gold watch if it meant they would have to pay taxes on that amount which could amount to 22 to 37% depending on their salary. Now companies mostly give gifts under $300 or so, throw him/her a retirement dinner and send them on their way.

I just retired and my employer gave me an A. Lange Sohne Saxonia and he paid the tax. 41 years and never called in sick once.
