There are some things one shouldn't post on forums.

Most of the value in the watch is that it is not known to the market.

Posting pictures publicly would destroy that value.
Sort of nonsense.
If we are talking of something never seen before i could agree (but if there is one, no matter known or unknown there will be always one only. There is the value). But since it's known the existence of the 1436 in steel (known are 4) it doesn't really matter since the watch is so rare that even if an unknown fifth or sixth show up wouldn't really impact the value.

I know a collector that have unicque pieces ( literally one piece ever made ) and the watch appeared on several books and article and the watch/ watches still retain their insane value no matter what.

It's more a personal choice but the value in fact doesn't get hit. I believe when someone show something that rare you risk more to be annoyed by people or dealer that will try to buy the watch more that have a loss in value.

It’s just an opinion. Nothing more, nothing less. I believe for important watches that a previously unknown and fresh to market example may carry a premium. Even if that premium is only 5% that’d be a lot of money on a seven-figure Patek.

Watches like that most of the time rely on previous auction and conditions. When a watch is unknown or never seen at the market mostly goes to an auction were you see a fight between collector.

There are quite a lot of example in the past of watches that have been known to exist or were before on an auction ( a 1518 steel and the BaoDai are the first that i can think of) but still fetch waaay more than the previous sale and way more than the estimate because watches like that rerely goes on the market......but you can be sure that other collector know that they are out there 😉

considering your location I would think you could buy that thing for pennies on the dollar. Grab it and get it fixed up.

Fred, the owner knows the value of his watch. Its just that he does not want to be hassled by requests to bring his watch to a PP ad to have it archived. However, his asking price is quite reasonable.

Would the BaoDai have fetched more in the most recent sale if it was completely unknown before then ? Or would it have fetched the same, or less ?

I have a steel PP splitty.
This watch looks good to me. It all depends on the price I guess.

Wow I know only 4 where made in stainless steel. You got a super rare 1436.

The first time he went on an auction score a good result but nothing even close to the result it obtain last time. The answer it's only about the market and whom is watching the Auction ( as a friend of mine unfortunately discover in recent time....). Also the market has changed a lot in the recent years so it's not easy to say.

Admits to a super rare SS PP, then says I won’t show a picture as it would now be known, yet admits to having one adding to the count.

sure that makes sense...

I hope you actually do have one. I would have loved to hear the story behind it as these SS Pateks always have interesting stories.

I don’t know what the asking price is and understand the temptation for a rare reference. It looks to me from the pics shared, to have the original enamel print, (assuming it’s still raised off the dial). At least some type of cleaning was done at some point with the marker areas showing a halo visual. Patek could certainly address the dial, but the cost would likely be very high and it still would not be period correct original.

Honestly talking about cost should be banned... did everyone else seriously just tell OP to not buy this incredible watch and have it refinished by Patek? OP didn’t even mention cost once in the post.

Do people not want to see this gloriously restored? @OP please buy this and send it home to get a new dial, and take some high quality photos for us to live through you ::psy::

1436 FB case is a legendary watch but condition is not what I would want to see for investment grade piece. But if the price/value is in your budget case then it might be a worthwhile watch to own.

My vintage watch dealer consulted his PP collector Friends who said that the dial looks origina but suggested to get an archive report from Patek just to make sure.

Archive papers will not tell you if the dial is original.

I have been offered a very rare and iconic 1946 Patek ref 1436 rattrapante but it appears to have been redialed. My question is it still worth buying this watch? Will the factory restore such an important watch? Any advice would be appreciated.

Patek will restore the dial but it still will not be as valuable as an original untouched dial.
