Omega Cal 551 crown stem removal mistake

Hello all,

I attempted to change the watch crown on my omega constellation and i believed i made a mistake by removing the crown stem while at time setting position.

1st attempt (to change crown)- removed crown and stem, changed crown, insert back crown and stem, no issues with movement operation except that the stem is too long,

2nd attempt (to shorten crown stem) - struggled to remove crown and stem, i think I didnt fully depress the button, pulled the crown to time setting position before pulling out the crown, shortened stem and re-inserted crown and stem, crown stem is not secured to the watch.

Problem encountered on 2nd attempt: After inserting back the crown, i will hear a pop sound (button circled in red will bounce back up) everytime i pull the crown out to time setting position. The whole crown with the stem can be removed from the watch.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to fix this?

Cheers!

Is it possible that you shortened the stem too much? If that’s the issue, the stem may not be locking in because the crown would stop it from going in all the way.

Does the setting lever fully pop out when you insert the stem in all the way? Do you see the crown touching the case when you insert the stem all the way in?

Several possibilities...

1 - you are not pushing the button in when you insert the crown/stem.

2 - Stem is too short as noted.

3 - The yoke has slipped out of the sliding pinion, which will require the hands and dial to be removed to reset these parts.

the setting lever didnt pop out when i insert the stem fully. crown is not touching the case. there is abit of play left between the crown and case.

Best decision you've made on this task.

PS: Don't feel bad, I did something similar some years ago and went the watchmaker route too.
