You are going to need to post much better photos, high-resolution, from all angles, including the inside.

2998 what? It appears to have an early dial but later sub register and maybe sweep second hand.

Having seen pictures of this piece at an auction recently; I would be very, very cautious. For instance, the case back does barely seem to have a double step, which suggests it might have seen a serious polish. It could also mean the picture I have looked at is simply overexposed.

In its defence, the hands could be original if it's a later 2998. Like a 2998-6, -61 or -62. Even the hour counter subdial has an original hand, which does not have a nipple. This is a unique characteristic of an 2998.

Either way, an assessment on a piece like this needs very, very detailed pictures and due diligence.

For those who want to know about the case back...
That doesn't look so bad at all... 😍 Wow!

Although the engraving is a little 'fat'. Could be the result of the photography, perhaps deviations in production. At first glance I'd say it looks like this watch has seen very little wear indeed. It would be nice to know what that case back covers in terms of movement (condition?), serial and of course sub reference.

Polished "background surface" with no machining marks left but light scratches still visible on the lower edge and such a strong unmolested Seahorse makes me doubt this is the original finish...
Maybe seahorse was re-applied

Seller doesn’t want to open the case back in fear of damaging it…

You mean the flat part of the caseback should not be polished when new from factory but more « matte » with signs of the machining?

This watch is advertised as nos from the original owner’s family

Thanks 😀

So, they want to sell an early Speedmaster with an equivalent Price Tag and don't have the money to go to a Watchmaker to open the Back and take Pics. From the inside ? If you want to buy that, offer to pay the Tax Invoice from the Watchmaker once you reach a Deal and deduct that ... Strange Situation. I would be very careful with that Seahorse engraving; could be Laser engraved? Looks not very consistent with that Time ...

😉

I find myself disagreeing with almost everyone on this forum lately.

In this image the case-back looks perfectly normal, they just butchered the photos on the main listing either with lighting or some sort of accidental editing/compression - the eye looks stretched on the other image.

https://drouot.com/en/l/30787387-omega-speedmaster-nos-montre-de-forme-ronde-chronographe

For an easy comparison, particularly the eye of the sea-horse here is a 105002 case-back I used to own on the right vs the above image they are a good match:

I think it is a really lovely example, correct minty early bezel, no one has re-cut the case incorrectly or grained the back, it has the correct flat hour counter and the radium has corroded the hands a little. It looks NOS to me. They probably just cloth polished it shiny and took terrible photos, that or I have been totally duped by some sort of auction house/vendor conspiracy - this seems less likely than it just being a very good example.

Happy to be proven wrong if so but I don't see any proof posted thus far.

I note our resident uber expert @Spacefruit has not opined. That speaks volumes to my ears.
