[next one! ] Any red flags on authenticity for this 1016?

The case is pretty soft and the bezel is a bit soft as well. On a podcast, Eric Wind had said a soft bezel will make or break a 1016. The case can probably be remediated, but it will be expensive. Aldo, have them pull the caseback gasket to check for pitting. You will also need to examine the dial quite closely because it looks like it’s not perfect. In all, it will be an expensive watch bargain or not. May be an OK deal if you can trade some stuff you are not wearing for it.

Thanks @Mark020 @vibe

You're doing exactly what's needed in a "should I buy?" thread, but maybe a bit harsh?
Well, let me put it in context: I'm working with a limited budget. I've looked (for a long time) at all 1016's below 14k on C24 and German/French/Austrian/Dutch/Belgian second hand sites. There are some with slightly better cases, but then they have other issues (non-matching hands etc).

This one, I'd hope to get below 10k (albeit without bracelet... but I have a spare 78360 that is laying around in my drawer).
Would that change your opinion on the "deal"?

I am not in the 1016-sphere, BUT: dial (+lume) and hands for me are +75% of the value - my personal value - of a collectors-watch with (again José) "overall matching patina/condition".
Many steel- watches , "Explorer!" , were used and polished. I like this Ex!

There are some scratches on the crystal, which Polywatch will solve. I think the dial is good. I've seen a video of the watch (can I somehow upload that??) where is was able to better distinguish dial from crystal scratches.

IMHO the case will need a lot of work and is polished to within an inch of its life

certainly taking of another INCH of material from the case won't leave much left of it, hahaha ;-)

The case back is nice; the rest of the case is poor. Very poor. It also has the wrong crystal, which can be changed but I would go on to the next. The 1016 is not a rare model, just the good ones are rare. Don’t rush!

Another one now!!

I think this is the one for me...

Mark 5 dial from 1983.

The caseback does NOT have the engraving for quarter/year... what do you think about that? Some letters look distorted on the photo, but I think it's a reflection. I will, in any case, buy the watch in-person and will open it to check. But for now, what about the missing year stamp?

Looks good?

I have to really stretch my budget for it, but I think I'll then be happy. "buy once, cry once".

83 should have a 78360 bracelet I recon, also the 80’s plexis are more flat. Photo isn’t sharp enough to judge that dial.

Well, I bought it 😂

I have a spare 78360 that I'll put on it. And sell the 7836 (perfect condition, but with 6251H clasp).

I'll post some pictures of the watch soon.

Ps: I'm a bit confused about the plexi. I thought all 1016 initially had the "super dome"?

Earlier tropic 22 had a dome profile but by the 80’s they appear non-domed with little to no distortion off axis AFAIK. I could be wrong though! The domed versions are very sought after and expensive, so if it is legit and in good condition there is value there.

Hi all,
Sorry, it's been a hectic couple of days.

I haven't yet managed to take some nice pics, but will do soon!

Correct for 1983
Thank you for confirming!!

Here's a picture of the profile of the crystal. It's certainly not a recent replacement. It's been polished a few times, including by myself this past weekend ;-)
I has no cracks and no severe scratches (just 1-2 slightly deeper ones that I just rounded off with Polywatch).

I wonder what you think!

It is most likely a correct plexi as there are no domed aftermarket plexis except for the very recent ones (past 10 years or so)

Hi everyone, here are finally some pictures of my purchase. Absolutely loving it. Thanks all for your help along the way!!!!!

Unpolished?? (NOTE: these are 558 endlinks --- i.e the wrong ones. Don't use them as a size reference for the lugs)

Pictures of the movement after I serviced it

I changed the bushing of the centre hole because I had one laying around..

Some small microstella adjustments

Looks very nice. Congrats on the purchase.

I also added a 1016 to my collection, nice to see yours as well.

Best case condition from what you posted so far.

I don't know about unpolished... but good enough for sure
