New FOIS owners question

I have the new version of the FOIS. I like it very much and i have an Ed white but i never wear it. But i liked the idea of having the Ed white legibility/look with the cheaper to service 3861 as the ticker.

To my surprise, someone was selling a modified EW dial here with the hand. When the price became “reasonable” I bought it. I purchased the spiralwinder display back and like that very much. BUT, since i got the EW dial installed there is some play (glass to caseback direction)… what i don’t know is if my installed forgot to put a spacer or silicone ring back on place…OR if there is some height difference between the use of an EW dial and the FOIS dial.

If someone can open their regular second generation FOIS… and see if it looks identical to mine (or if a spacer/ring is missing), it would be greatly appreciated.

Here’s mine.

I doubt anyone is going to do that. It voids the warranty.

Since you have the watch already open, try putting a gasket/spacer ring and see if it solves the problem. Or ask the watchmaker who worked on the mod.

Boy, you must have money to burn to do this!

Thanks for the replies.

I’m guessing I am not the first person to install a display back on a FOIS (they must be selling them to someone) so reopening is not a great difficulty.

Definitely don’t have money to burn. That would be a nice problem to have. I just thought the dial swap looked better and its price came down to not needing to bad.

Yes, slipping a gasket in while open would be the easy way to test but sadly i gave away all my tools (and such) a few years back and my smith is across the bay so trying to save a trip. But, that might be necessary.

Thanks.

The number of people who are installing exhibition casebacks on their FOIS 2.0 are miniscule compared to the number of owners.

I've done a fair amount of modding of watches through the years (including Omega) but I would never mod a watch under warranty. There's just no compelling reason to potentially throw away $700 (the cost of a service) if something went wrong.

I did it with my previous FOIS, but it costed half as much, so I assumed the risk. I had several issues as well, but it was worthwhile

Yeah that looks great. I’ve had at least a dozen Speedys over the years and had purchased several dials from a local watch store here in the Bay Area. Had that dial and just loved it. My favorite was the blue Apollo dial with the white subs. The Japanese Mito dial was more expensive and cleaner but I actually found myself liking the red date.

I thought I’d love the FOIS dial Alan hands a lot but I found they were bothersome. I didn’t like the shiny hands from the start and the glossy dial ultimately bugged me having had all Matt dials in the past. Like having the 3861. The EW is nice to have but it feels too expensive to wear so it sits in the box. Want to sell it but am holding on for now. 321 is a gem.

To each their own, right. I felt compelled… and, that’s ok.
Absolutely. It's your watch and you're free to do anything you want with it.

Did you get the version for the 3861 specific ? Because there is a difference in both case and caseback iirc.
I have a Standard 1861 Speedmaster with that Spiralwinder sapphire and it needs a 2nd O ring to fix the movement securly when you screw down the back. This O ring replaces the standard anti-magetic cap/cover which normally sits over the movement and presses down on the movement.

Here is mine with no play whatsoever and you can just see the black O ring.

Curious with the 1861 movement - when using the spiralwinder caseback are we losing all antimagnetic properties?
