dammit. i was hopeful it was just how it looked. Ok, so the search begins for a new balance. Awesome. Thank you. (Still gonna clean it. 馃榿)

Probably the most common problem.... Thus the invention of the inca shock / shock resist on balances.

Typically, a thorough examination of the watch prior to cleaning it, should result in realizing anything that requires a repair, such as broken balance staff pivots! How is it possible you missed that, and still had to have someone on the OB diagnose the broken pivot from a grainy image? Required repairs should be diagnosed and dealt with, before the cleaning process.

Well the simple explanation is I'm learning. I didn't realize it was broke, I get you guys have calibrated and trained eyes, I'm getting there. This was my first old (very old) pocket watch and I assumed the pivot looked like that as that's how it looked when i disassembled it. The knowledge I've gotten from this thread has been invaluable and I've still going to keep learning. I appreciate all of your guidance and input. Even you Canuck, though abrasive and stern, gave valuable advice I appreciate, and learned from. I have a new balance on order and I'll let you all know how that goes, hopefully it's not broken as well.

Also, pithwood is used to clean pivots. Pegwood goes in the jewels. Balsa is too soft; fork out for some pegwood.
