Yes, a lead gasket would be appropriate for this.

Thank you. Being new to all this, I was a bit taken aback - I mean, we did have rubber seals in the 1950s. Presumably JLC were a fairly conservative outfit . . . by the way, can one still get the tool for opening the screw-in caseback? (which has a series of flats around the edge).

A proper three point JAXA or Vigor adjustable wrench will do the trick.
