Jaeger-LeCoultre Club watches were a lower price line introduced in the early 1970’s. The movements were purchased from A. Schlid, I believe, with very little modification by JLC.

I would equate this as similar to the relationship between Smart Cars and Mercedes-Benz. Yes, Mercedes owned Smart, but the differences are fairly obvious.

I completely agree with you. The time of the appearance of quartz watches in general has greatly affected the watch industry. And to survive and stay afloat, it was necessary to reduce the cost of producing watches. Therefore, such a step was taken to purchase third-party mechanisms. But JLC engineers took a long time to choose which mechanism to buy . And this one was chosen because it was the best serial mechanism of that time.

A. Schlid made generic movements for hundreds of watch companies. Good, solid, reliable movements, but certainly not the “best”.

JLC still made their own movements for some watches, but those models were far more expensive.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Club entered the market in the 60s as an affordable mass-market alternative to high-end Jaeger-LeCoultre products. To keep it affordable Jaeger-Lecoultre chose the caliber AS 1906, which was the best mass-produced movement on the market.Although those watch are mostly unfamiliar today and don’t get the value of the in-house models from Le Sentier, but theyre fine watches for daily use.

What does “mass produced” mean? JLC also mass produced movements. Are the A. Schlid movements really better? If so, why were they put in a lower priced line of watches? Who compared them?

Many more questions than answers.

I think it was not a spontaneous decision, but a decision made based on the analysis of JLC specialists ( but this is my guess)

I do not know how much the translator will correctly convey my idea. I'll try to guess. I'm just an average middle-class person who can't afford a JLC watch. I go to the store and see the prices and come back empty-handed because JLC watches are expensive for me. One day I come to the store and see a JLC CLUB watch, at a price that suits me. Am I going to find out what the mechanism is ? of course not. I'll buy it and be happy. It seems to me that this is the audience that JLC engineers were counting on when they created this model.

The AS movement is good enough, but they could maybe have used the 25jewel variant I think it was a hard time economically to be JLC when this came out…

Which did you get first? And do you find yourself wearing them both?

I recently acquired the Reserve de Marche (same case as your two-hander, I believe), in part because I haven't found myself wearing the Perpetual much (in the Bay Area), partially because just knowing how much it costs makes me a little more hesitant (even though steel is perhaps still less flashy than your gold)...
