I am looking for a nerdy community for Cartier watches similar to Omega watches. I’m interested in a vintage Santos and wanted to talk to some experts about specific detail details and considerations for buying vintage. Thank you.

Welcome

You do know they only slapped their name on stuff, right?

Best to find out who made the watch that you fancy for Cartier and seek such a Forum.

Cartier has a long history as a watch manufacturer, including of the iconic tank which has been made continuously in basically its current form for more than 100 years. I'm not really a Cartier fan, and they went through a very ugly period where they capitalized on their name to sell crappy watches, but they are a legit watch manufacturer, IMO.

I don't know of a specific forum for Cartier, but the OP can certainly post in one of the relevant sub-fora on OF, and there may be other Cartier enthusiasts.

Manufacturer like Ball Watch Company circa 1895-1955? Get the pieces in house and then tart them up?

I think it's a bit more nuanced than that. If you are thinking only of the movement, I think that Cartier historically outsourced movements until fairly recently. Of course, many other manufacturers (including Rolex) did the same. But a watch is not only a movement.

TBH, I am really not the right person to defend Cartier as a manufacturer, since I have never owned one or even gone very deep in research. I understand that because they are primarily considered a jeweler, they might not appear to be a serious watchmaker at first glance. But I don't think that's really the case. Through much of the 20th century, they made high quality watches with unique and distinctive designs that remain highly collectible. They went through a low point (IMO), where they made a cheap and popular line of watches that were little better than fashion watches, which hurt their reputation. More recently, Cartier has re-emerged as a serious manufacturer with in-house movements.

Perhaps the OP can provide correct any errors in the above, and provide more context better than I can.

Cartier can boast of having one of the earliest wristwatches (Santos). While not the very first, it definitely helped popularize it substantially.

And, it was the first pilot's watch. That's quite a contribution to horology, and a bit more than "only slapped their name on stuff", if you ask me.
