Hi all,

Hope all is doing fine.

I wanted to ask about any tool or tool set you guys are using to measure jewel inner hole diameters. I know trying different diameter pins is a valid method but where do you get those pins? Are there any sets with precision pins? I could not find anything like that online.

Please share your insights on what are you using for such job and if you can suggest any tool set that is affordable, would be awesome.

Thanks

The tools are called 'gauge pins' though they are hard to find much smaller than ~0.1mm, and can be expensive.

There IS a tool called the "Obama Jewel Hole Gauge" that is vintage, but is a neat solution to this.

THIS tool: https://www.ebay.com/itm/266201351344 is reasonably nice, though only goes down to 0.6mm.

THIS SITE (https://www.geocities.ws/dushang2000/Horology/Jewelling.html) about 2/3 the way down mentions Jewel Hole Plug Gauges and shows a picture of a Bergeron set. BUT no tool number nor google search has gotten me further on that.

Thank you very much for the insights, that Obama hole gauge is awesome but as you said it is close to unreal to get it though.

I saw second tool you mentioned on ebay, was thinking to get one but looks like it has 0.1 precision and as you noted the lowest is 0.6. I was more thinking about a set with separate pins in 0.05 increment at least. But looks like this is best i can get so far

You can also use tool like an Isoma but it’s way more expensive than pins gauges. 😀

making a set of gauge pins is often a watchmaking school assignment, since if you can pull it off you wont be worried about turning and burnishing pivots again, many of the sets you see are just that hand made sets of gauges. I believe the set that trash_gordon shared is also a school assignment set since it does say watchmaking school fleurier
