I think they finally got it right
That's one badass looking setup. You gotta share some photos from this.

Just came across this thread. I've owned A LOT of cameras over the years. The only ones I can't seem to part with are my Leica M6, Leica M2, and my Rolleiflexes. The Leica M6 is one of the best cameras ever made. My current favorite camera is the Graflex 4x5 Super D if you don't know it check it out.

Agreed. I have an M6 and it's a pleasure to shoot with. I also have a Rolleiflex and a couple Hasselblads. For 4x5 I have a Wista.

Leicawise, I also have a IIIf and the X1 and X2.

My favorite of all of these is definitely the M6. But the Hasselblad is a very close second, which requires a slower mindset for capturing images.

I "get" rangefinder cameras - I've got about 20 of the things all in working condition.
I "get" film in 35mm - please don't ask how many bodies.
I "get" 120 film in 6x4.5 and 6x6
I "get" digital.
I "get" that Leica cameras have got an identifiably distinct design style

but what I haven't yet "got" is how some photos can only be taken on Leica kit? Can someone explain this to me?

Well, the old saying that some pictures can only be taken with a Leica rangefinder camera is bullshit.

What is true is that it's unlikely you'll catch a candid moment with a big fat DSLR because these kits are so big you probably don't bring them wherever you go. That gives you plenty of "I wish I had my camera with me" moments. With a Leica M, not so much.

Also, the rangefinder is built in a way that you can take photos very (and I mean VERY) quickly. Don't listen to people who tell you that you should use zone focusing, you don't need a rangefinder to do that. I mean real sharp focus right on point. With experience, you instinctively know where your finger should go to focus at a certain distance.

A Leica camera is the perfect tool to snap pictures very very quickly while keeping complete control over the process. So, there is no such thing as "pictures you can only take with a Leica rangefinder", but good luck getting the shot quicker than a Leica guy with years of training.

Thank you sir, I get what you're saying and only for the sake of impishness I love the notion of Leica as point and shoot equipment.

The optics are the key to the “Leica look”, the camera itself is just a box- albeit a lovely box. And the sensors in the new digi’s are superb. But that “only Leica” is about the look, and each generation of lens is different.

Fortunately you can improve on the Leica look with old and new Zeiss lenses.

😉😁😎
