Honestly, SOOO many people seem to come to the forum after having done zero research.

I kind of wish that the mods would put together a 'is this real' sub-forum with some required rules that made the person do some research. Some sort of 'form' that you have to abide by to get responses that includes

:Family Hierloom -vs- just purchased for owning -vs- just purchased for flipping -vs- I want to buy
:Required front/back pictures in good shape
:How much I paid/the asking price is/etc
:What research I've already done to figure it out, and what models I think it looks like
:Why, after doing the above research, I still think it is suspcious


Though, I guess by the time you get through those 5 questions, it'd be a basically empty sub-forum, so...

I've never understood why people get their undies in a bunch over threads like this. It's not like the modern Omega page is overrun with threads. And what research is a watch novice supposed to do? They came to a website that is populated by Omega enthusiasts and experts. To me that's the surest way to get a correct answer.

It takes very little effort to either provide an answer or hit the back button and move on to another thread that is of interest to you.

Watch forums have a reputation for being unfriendly to newbies (along with many other niche forums). While people who start threads like this are unlikely to be return customers, I think every new visitor is entitled to a non-hostile reception.

I agree with you about the watch knowledge, and about the anti-newbie snark at large on certain other forums; but I'm just not ever going to tolerate lack of basic politeness, and the OP is almost suspiciously provocative in that respect, sorry. I'm certainly not going to dignify it with a reply, and I'm amazed and impressed that more knowledgeable OFers than me so consistently do. I respect the latter greatly for both their patience and their willingness to educate others, but I can't emulate them on either of those counts.

I think politeness is important and helpful. That said, some people coming here do not speak English as a first language and they might not be nuanced with what a native speaker would consider polite discourse. If I were writing on a Japanese forum I can only imagine the atrocities I would commit unintentionally.

I also know that some people have Autism/Aspergers and they don't really have the pleasantry gene. As long as someone isn't being overtly obnoxious, I'm willing to let such things go.

^ Food for thought, thank you. I think I do always allow for your first point, but I'm not going to claim any high ground on the second. Always a tricky issue to negotiate, no question.
