You haven't said it was a watch... Given the shape of the box, I'd go for a 8 day clock !

...how about a dead seconds chronometre....that'd be about that size?

Yes, you are right, these clocks were delivered in wooden boxes - I don´t know if there were additional outer boxes but I don´t think so.
