GPHG 2025 TAG Heuer Carrera Astronomer WBX2110.BA0044

I was browsing the GPHG nominees for this year and came across this. Not seen or heard of it before but I'm intrigued. Seems to be another vintage remake and at 39mm seems to pack a bit of horological punch for its size (the Seafarer tide function - which is the same as moon cycle - was in a bigger 41mm).

Says 4,550CHF retail so around $5,650.

Anyone any info on this? Can't see it yet on the TAG site.

Marketing blurb:

With the TAG Heuer Carrera Astronomer, the Swiss Maison reaches for the moon, reviving its historic connection to space exploration through a strikingly modern take on the moonphase complication. A tribute to astronaut John Glenn’s 1962 orbital mission, during which a Heuer stopwatch became the first Swiss timepiece in space, this new 39mm steel timepiece bridges past and future with confidence.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Astronomer reinterprets the traditionally poetic moonphase with engineered precision. At 6 o’clock, a rotating disc displays the lunar cycle in exceptional detail. Arrows inside the circle track the age of the moon from day 1 to 29.5—a rare feature in modern watchmaking. The moon phases are coated with Super-LumiNova®, ensuring exceptional legibility at a glance. Inspired by the 1949 Heuer Solunar, the complication offers both visual clarity and horological precision, reaffirming TAG Heuer’s mastery of functional elegance.

The aesthetic is no less exacting. A silver sunray brushed dial is paired with black and silver flange accents, rhodium-plated hands, and crisp Arabic numerals, all enclosed in a finely brushed and polished steel case. The iconic beads-of-rice bracelet—a TAG Heuer signature—completes the piece with a nod to 1960s heritage Heuer models.

Beneath the surface, the Calibre 7 moonphase movement ensures 56 hours of power reserve, while the screw-down caseback—laser-engraved with an astronomical observatory—seals the story of celestial precision. Bold yet understated, technically sophisticated yet intuitively legible, the TAG Heuer Carrera Astronomer encapsulates the Maison’s legacy of innovation and avant-garde spirit. It brings the moonphase complication into a new era—one that remains grounded in heritage, but firmly turned towards the moon.

Edited thread name to include model number

Interesting watch! I’m sure @Jim Dollares will welcome its silver dial 😉. Caseback is also nice 👍🏼

Wasn't there talk of brands raging due to gphp "leaked" releases and the competition entries were removed from the website and eventually came back again. I guess TAG didn't have enough time to release this one before gpph unveiled it for them again

Good memory.
I'm surprised to see this to be honest.

I wondered when they'd get around to doing a moonphase again, first one since 1987ish... the Golden Hours watches. At least they haven't priced it at £120,000 because moonphases are so complex.

Ah. TAG joining the growing numbers of microbrands offering cheap moonphases now that Sellita offers one.

Ya know when I heard 'Carrera moonphase' I thought they were doing their own version of a chronograph calendar moonphase, like Zenith and others have done. I see I have overestimated TAG yet again

What's funny is that this Astronomer reminds me of some of the funky Heuer designs from the '80s for some reason. Although it's not a direct tribute/remake of anything.

While the moonphases released in the mid-80s look like tributes to the Heuers from the '40s. A forty year look behind either way.

These were the last moonphases TAG sold. From the 1987-1988 catalogue. White dial models have gold plated cases, gold dial models have solid gold cases and hand wound movements. Not sure what movements are in the white dials, might be quartz given the numbers start with 1.

While these Astronomer moonphase watches look more 'accurate' than the old style moonphase I can't help but think if this wasn't your only watch you'd never bother setting it... and that's where the old fashioned style wins out because it's more aesthetically pleasing, even if it's wrong.

Is this a glassbox or a regular 39mm Carrera? Looks like a glassbox, but not sure.

Thanks Anthony. I mean it looks like there is a glassbox on the render, but there's no 3/4 angle to confirm it.

At first glance, I thought it was a glassbox too. But upon further inspection, I think it's a normal 39mm Carrera case.

The way to tell is the glassbox domed crystal goes all the way to the edge of the case. Whereas the normal Carrera has this outer ring/bezel that the flat crystal sits within. The Astronomer has the outer ring around the crystal.

Regular crystal. A glass box dome would show.
