Hey gang, anyone landed this? I missed the Dink version, last month.
Been calling boutiques all day, no luck.
Any suggestion?

I think Synchron did a better job to release reissue this week. Great execution and perfectly priced. For $14k I rather find an original in my opinion.

I wish you all the luck.

In the off chance you don’t succeed, I would offer one tiny silver lining: you won’t have to wish that watch did not have a boxed sapphire distorting the outer edge of the dial so harshly 😕

Strangely, Dink goes so far as to tout this: “the vintage-aesthetic boxed sapphire crystal. That crystal creates a distorting effect to the outer edges of the dial.”

Love the watch except for a couple of things 😉

Dink version san date. That sucker picked up an extra $6-10k in open market.
I don’t mind the date, i usually strap on the piece for the entire week. I need a little date reminder by mid week.

I hear you. It reminded me of 5513 super dome. I actually like it.
My Heuer Fragment and Longines Legend Diver have similar “glass box” sapphire.

i think the opposite: the BP “boxed” sapphire is the opposite of the 5513, in that the “boxed” sapphire has a nearly vertical wall with a nearly 90* turn into a flat plateau.

such a boxed crystal can be done well or not well, for my tastes. Your Longines and Hauer, if they have a boxed crystal, are done really well - notice the lack of choppy distortion of the margins, etc.

compare with this, where the minute track has completely disappeared (blue arrow), the hour indices are duplicated, and the date window is a smear

In theory a boxed crystal is supposed to increase the legibility of the dial when done right - not turn the dial into a funhouse mirror

I still rather like the watch (like any BP that’s not 56mm across and 22mm tall, really), but I would very much want to see that crystal and dial in hand before a purchase

I really enjoy OF - this thread enables me to know of new launch (yes, I’m quite slow with these kind of news), views & suggestions from members which I learn.

Thank you all!

@ngo516 its a really good looking piece and hope you secure one soon.

Did you sign up from the wait list? I think some people have had success with that in the past.

I ordered one. The Hodinkee Mil-spec opened my eyes to the 40mm FF and the brand. The mil-spec is super awesome in the flesh and it was my favorite purchase of 2020. While I agree with other commenters that the Mil-spec is nicer, I think this watch is awesome, too, and different enough to justify both. I will reserve all final judgement until I see it in person.

You pay for 12 indices, BP throws in a few extra. Plus 50% extra date window. More is better, no?!

I suspect the shot angle exaggerated distortion. I won’t have the option of seeing it in person. The Longines LD glass box is superb at $2k. My money on BP at least matches its peer at the price bracket they compete in. I agreed, the distortion is pronounced at angles.

Here is its sibling, the Barakuda, same glass box.

I lust after that Barakuda on the regular

I’d be surprised to learn it has the same boxed crystal, but in the other hand it does seem that the design of dial and rehaute (among other things like color of crystal gasket used) can significantly effect how well a crystal “works”

On another thread I went down a filthy rabbit hole trying to determine why the new SS 321B has no sapphire “milky ring” while other Speedmasters utilizing apparently near identical crystal design have significant milky ring ... after 5 pages of nerding the “answer” was middling at best

I would still add your name to the waitlist again, anyway. On TRF at least one guy mentioned that he was able to get a Mil-spec weeks after it was sold out. There will ultimately be some returns and cancellations, etc.

Thanks! Just checked it out and indeed very informative.

And do agree with @sgrossma’s suggestion to be on waitlist, at the boutiques and online authorised dealers.

Some of these FF limited editions look great, but even at 40mm I just can't accept that case design. It looks like something a microbrand would do, especially the nameplate on the left side.

Would look great in the "Bathyscaphe" case though! Maybe if I have time I'll do a quick mockup.

Dink MilSpec looks best out of the limited releases. Date and brand deletions are welcoming, although I can live with both. Congrats on landing one.
We need pics to properly criticize it.

Here we go, what if it looked like this?

The bezel is not properly to scale - I didn't retrofit the look into the Bathyscaphe bezel design, just resized the standard FF bezel + removed the extra space in the rehaut. So the dial looks bigger here, however in a 38mm case I believe that that would be a plus!

I'd probably be a lot more interested, though the high price would still most likely put me off.
