I started the renovation of our old family farm in the fall of 2023. As I continue to work, we’ve now added bees and hatched our first chicks today to add our flock to the property. Fencing and sheep to come.

The process has been cathartic for me. The toil, refreshing. With much work yet to be done, I wonder if there are other members who operate small (or large) farms and/or gardens?

I have a 5’x5’ garden plot, and it brings me a lot of joy. Your new adventure sounds amazing!

I have a 5’x5’ garden plot, and it brings me a lot of joy. Your new adventure sounds amazing!

We also have a small garden and it brings us joy as well. When we moved here I was really surprised how much a little “green” can do for your well-being. Bees are a little late this year for us, they were here a couple of weeks ago, when the cherry trees blossomed but have largely gone by now. Hopefully they will come back soon.

Lucky to have a small garden here and I do enjoy it ! A very satisfying Time all along the different seasons. Choosing my watch and gazing at my garden when I open the shutters are part of my favorite things every morning.

Your farm and lands look great !

How the bees keeping is going ?
Honey bees are a new adventure for the Mrs and me. The queens are producing much brood and there is some capped honey. A bear turned over one of my hives last weekend. Luckily, the racks and brood were left unharmed. I reset the hive last Sunday, strapping them together to prevent them coming apart.

I’ll work them today, check their status, and make sure my queen is still ok.

Looks good guys. I try to garden but mostly end up feeding the slugs, bugs and deer. I did manage to harvest about 30+ pounds of cherries from my two little trees. The plum trees produced a half dozen or so, and the apple trees weren't a whole lot better. I gave the trees a good prune, so hopefully they do better this year.

Well well bear ! I've just heard at the radio a beekeeper - active in the french pyrenees - mentionning that only electric fence were effective (and did not harm the bears). But I have no clue if this is practical for you 😀

If y'all look back at my Spring posts for the last 10-15 years, you'll see my day Lillies in many of my WRUW posts.

Planted 50 full plants in raised beds a few weeks ago on my West side after clearing my giant oak tree of the winter wind sheer damage which opened up the area to some good sunshine most of the day.

Were not warranted to bloom first season, but I kick butt with my green thumb, baby....😎

Love perennials. All around these planters I will also plant raised beds of iris bulbs this Sept.

Also, as a bonus, I wanted to thwart my neighbor's generous gift of overflow water from his gutter downspout extension......

Me: "Could you run it 2 feet south to your lawn rather than 2 feet east interfering with my lawn and making a mud slick?"

Neighbor: "No, I kinda like it this way."

Well, OK, then.

Update on the chicks. 9 of the 13 hatched, one passed over night leaving me with eight energetic chicks. Feisty little things. Probably end up with 8 roosters 😁
