Constellation Globemaster Musings

I really want to love it. It's just slightly too big, the white dial is matte and doesn't reflect nicely (as already mentioned), the hands and markers are too plain (dauphine and arrowhead please!) and no screw down crown. I think it's a beautiful watch, but it misses too many of my requirements to make me lust over it.
Why would you need a screw down crown? It has a 100 m water resistance and don't tell me you would dive deeper than that wearing a Globemaster. Get a dive watch or a proper dive computer, not a GADA watch. Sure, the AT has 150 m WR, but come on, who needs that? You can even swim in a Speedy and that is as deep as 99.9% people would go.

I would say the Globemaster should be seen as a modern interpretation of the old Constellations from the 70's. Released in 2015, but designed probably a few years before that, it follows the trend of the 2010s, i.e. larger diameter watches. Judging it today, when smaller diameter is making a comeback, it is pulling the short end of the rope. For all those that wish a thinner case - maybe it could be done, but it surely wasn't high on the design priority list in the 2010s. Those that call for a dress watch, you can always choose from the hundreds (ouch) modern Constellation watches that Omega offers. I understand that the pie-pan is what gives the vibes of the old watches, but what can we do. It is a pity the Globemaster range somehow fell out of grace, I would love to see some updates now that they have the 10th anniversary - a true GMT in the 39mm case anyone? They could squeeze a fourth hand in 😀

I looked very hard at this, but for me the design overall just tips to inelegant/brutal and clumsy especially from a 3/4 side view. Straight on the design is great. Reminds me of the evolution of bmw car designs.

Let's just start with this, I don't swim with my speedy and I own multiple watches that don't have screw down crowns. It's a feature that I enjoy on a modern watch though. It's nice to wear one watch on vacation and not have to worry about taking it off: and yes I'm aware of water resistance ratings.

Also, this was a want and not a need. If Omega suddenly made a globemaster constellation without a screw down crown but it had a pie pan dial, dauphine hands and redesigned bezel and case I'd probably be unable to resist buying one. As is, it's low on my list of wants.

None of these watches are needs, they're just wants. Do I NEED a chronograph feature on a Speedy? No, but it's cool and occasionally useful so I want it. The entire package checks off enough wants that lack of a screw down crown doesn't deter me from buying.

This is probably as close as possible that Omega released something vintage-inspired sans pie-pan dial. Photo from Fratello

Now this one lacks soul to me. The dial and Seamaster lettering looks flat like a re-dial. The case and hour markers are nice, but looks polished and soft (I know it's gold, but I prefer the sharp edges of a true dog-leg). And it's also about $22k USD.

This is a very helpful shot that illustrates the inspirations of the GM.

Yes you're right in that the GM doesn't look that much bigger than the C Shape, but for me once you account for the thickness, the GM is rather more bulky. Perhaps you can show us these 3 together from different angles?

But yes, definitely no screw-down crown for me! I think though it just shows you the identity of the GM is a bit of a confusion. Is it trying to be modern or vintage? Is it trying to be dressy or sporty? I suppose from a different perspective it could be both!

Hah I love mine. I do like the depth of the pie pan dial but I'm a sucker for grand feu. Pricing is expensive but considering the competition and omegas own catalog it's not out of line.

I'm not usually an omega guy, but I do wish more of their sporty watches had screw down crowns. Seems like they reserve those for the obvious DIVER watches and not the dressy divers/sport watches.

In the end these things are all subjective. However, the reality is that in business, for your product to be successful, you have to appeal to enough people to actually open their wallets and buy them. Sales numbers don't lie and the GM from a sales perspective just hasn't done well, and I don't think it's just a marketing issue, although I must say Omega does seem to concentrate the marketing on the Seamaster and Speedmaster lines, understandably. I suppose both the Constellation and the De Ville both lean more towards the dressy side and maybe that's why they haven't had the love for some time.

3 years of ownership and still loving mine. Accuracy always amazes me.

That looks perfect on your wrist. I think it works well for those with slightly larger wrists.

I have no doubt from a technical standpoint the METAS certified movement is amazing, as you have attested to.

Thanks! I have a 7” wrist.

Stopped looking at other watches since purchasing, other than the blue dial GM!

TBH, the size of the Globemaster doesn't bother me, nor does the spacing of the text. The Red and Blue dial ones are absolute stunners IMO, and I'd very much consider an AC if I was looking at them.

Though they don't fit my style sadly, so the Globemaster is a 'perfect' watch for SOMEONE ELSE'S wrist for me.

The Globemaster sits in that odd spot of not being too dressy and not being too sporty. I love my 39mm GM because you can change the look depending on the strap or bracelet. The Blue dial was the obvious choice for me due to having a more distinct "pie-pan" when the light hits the dial. The AC looks nice too, but IMHO too large for my wrist fitting in that dress/sport/gada watch size.
