On the previous occasion in 2013, it sold for $8100, so perhaps the swindler-seller was hoping for a comparable result and used Mr. Shill Bidder to pump up the price -- to the benefit of the loser in this case.

It gives them a chance to put the shine on you by private messaging which is much more personal. And, an opportunity to use the favorite weapon of all confidence artists: they make you feel empathy for them and get you on their side.
