It might have been - it was a gray market piece from amazon. His later examination of one from an AD was a whole different story.

Which is why I am tickled to give a couple extra hundred to my AD for a brand spankin' new factory warrantied watch. Sometimes even at the same price as grey market, which makes me go from tickled to giddy. 馃槣

Do you guys use a light box for your watch pics or not?

I don't - I use an open window.

Natural indirect sunlight is best. A little reflection can be a good thing to add depth.

Damn. My favorite watch photography article appears to be offline. It was titled "The making of a watch calendar", and it had a nice/brief section on gear and lenses.

The guy doing the watch calendar shoots used a Canon EF 180mm f3.5L Macro lens. I've been watching prices on ebay waiting for a cheap second hand one for a long time, but it hasn't happened yet 馃榿

It's really a shame they took the article down.

I've been using a 180mm tamron macro for years on my watch pictures - the focal length enables you to position the tripod at a comfortable height. The third party prime macros are IMO of the same quality as the nake brand lenses.

That's exactly what this article mentioned. Getting further away from the subject seemed to help a lot for lighting options, especially when watches have so many different materials/reflections to contend with.

We recently sold our Nikon (just a worn out D90 +lenses) and haven't decided where to go from here. Probably one of the new/cheap full frame models. NIkon or Canon is the question. Depends which macro lens I can score for a good price.

Can you post some big photos from the Tamron? 馃榾

Oh yeah, I remember those. Nice work 馃榾

I tried the web archive and google cache for that article. No go.

So, you think the Tamron is pretty comparable to the Nikon equivalent?

The Tamron is a fine lens, in the real world you would see no difference.

Agreed. The sigma 180mm macro is equally good.

Somewhat off-topic but I love how any detailed photo of a Cal 321 movement always comes out looking so good, for a movement designed in the 1940s and intended for function rather than form, it happens to be extremely photogenic.

Such nice lines and flow to it. Not a single part looks out of place.

I keep saving up for a Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro - every time I get close I put the cash towards another watch purchase.馃榾
Result iphone5 for most shots and if you can get the light ok not to bad.
