Why do you refer to that as a Royal Oak?

Because that is what most resources I could find refer to the square integrated references as.

Because AP referred to it as a Royal Oak when they sold them.

Looks to be the 90s variant of the 6005/6009 but can't find any 56049 in gold at all?

I’m by no means deeply familiar, but 6009BA with possibly aftermarket jewel work?

Here was a NOS 6009BA - I’m rather leaning towards your example having had aftermarket jewel work?

“The reference 6009 was the first-ever Royal Oak to integrate a quartz movement, following demand from clients at the time. According to Raphael Balestra, from the Audemars Piguet archives,

“As we were introducing quartz into the Royal Oak for the first time, we wanted to mark this change by creating a different version of the design. This is how the rectangular Royal Oak came to be.”

Building on the design penned by Gerald Genta, the reference 6009 reshaped the Royal Oak case into a rectangular format, whilst keeping its core identity intact. Believed to have been produced for a brief five year period, between 1980 and 1985, it integrated the updated caliber 2502.” From here

I agree with others, the jewelled work looks aftermarket.

At first I had thought that it was a 6009, but this one had the date which is why i was thinking it was a 56049, jsut hadn't found any in gold.

The diamonds im not sure on, but aftermarket does seem reasonable - unless it could be proved otherwise with an extract.
