Antique/Thrift Store Finds

Nice kind of busy today. I popped in to say Hi! to Archer. Then it was off to meet an old friend for lunch but he was late, so I did a lap at the nearby antique market.

A watch. Nothing fancy but for $8 I have a nice strap.

I am always on the lookout for old footballs. Got one today.

Looking forward to what I hope will be a close Super Bowl. I am cheering for the team that trails with 5 minutes to go.

When @DaveK visits I will let him pick an awl from this batch. These tools came with this amazing old box. As a teenager I worked in shoe repair. Leatherwork goes back a long time for me.

Check out this really nice tin box that still contains a bicycle chain and instructions. (I did not buy it, I use Dura Ace chains! Haha!)

I almost bought this early book about airplanes. It reminded me of @Omegafanman

Love the AFL football! I grew up (in the late '60s and '70s) as a Raiders fan, during their golden years. Unfortunately, in the case of Al Davis and his son Mark, the apple did fall too far from the tree...

The town where I live is known for it's antique malls. They cater to the Jurrors who get called to the nearby county courts. I have never really seen any watches at such. Most of the stuff is not really antique, more 'vintage' or collectable.

I never bother much to go down and look at stuff. The parking is metered, and it it a two mile walk.

There was a time when I was more active, I lived in a nearby town and the person who ran the mall was a neighbor. I learned a lot. Most of the stuff they sold was from Australia and delivered by container. It was mostly form the 1950s (this was in the 1980s.) Guess they were still making good furniture and things down under.

There was a bunch of leaded glass windows (incorrectly called stained glass.) When the 1989 quake happened this was smashed. Since I had the tools for working on them, I was given the whole lot. I still have some of these windows. Mostly in the workshop I totally under use. Here is one in my room. Along with all my pet spiders.

Did a stadium tour in Vegas last year and totally get what you say. Underachieving is an understatement.

Those look amazing. I can picture much of that haul looking great in a shadow box. Funny, I just ordered an awl from a fellow local leather worker today ::facepalm1::

. He makes them himself on a lathe, with spent shell casings to hold the pointy bit. These old ones you found will have a great feel, and will look dope in photo shoots.

My local vintage shop is having a hard time sourcing product these days. It's rare to find great stuff in the city any more. I just binge-watched Salvage Kings on Amazon last week. It gave me antique fever like no one's business, and made me homesick for drives in northern Ontario.

Unfortunately Tony, that’s not an AFL football. Looks to be an early NFL football from just after the AFL merger in the early 1970’s, since it mentions both the AFC and NFC on it.

In fact it was used in the first game ever played by the Oakland Raiders.

They make excellent armrests! A have two that do not stay inflated. They may become watch pouches or straps. Good eye on the CFL logo Gator.

The Wilson is still my favorite. (I do not follow CFL. NCAA and NFL take up enough of my time!)

Recent finds. Two Casios for ten bucks. The yellow one was running fast. I swapped the movements. Yellow is more uncommon and my wife will like it. It may be a good watch for kayaking. The plastic protective film is still on the yellow watch.

And I paid $3 for a Seiko clock. When I inserted a new battery it was not running. I found a start/stop lever on the back. Sort of a hacking feature. Solid feel and I will hang it in my workshop… works well.

Not from an antique store per se, but an estate sale at a big old house in the well-heeled part of town. It kind of felt like an antique store as my wife and I walked through. The frame is solid wood (maybe walnut?) with wicker-type panels on the sides, and it reclines. The upholstery was in pretty decent shape -- just needed a good cleaning. It was the last day of the sale and it was marked down to $150. I only had $70 in my pocket and they agreed to it.

My wife thought it was haunted by the previous owner and didn't really sit in it for a few years. Now I catch her in it every so often.

$30 at my favorite thrift store. Broken suspension spring, $400 to repair. If this was an earlier version I would have attempted to repair the suspension spring myself. The 540s require different tools and springs can be hard to find.

I picked up a Wenger much like that one and I love it. Look at the loom! On a fresh battery it is within a second a month.
In fact the cases are identical. Actually the are the same except dial colour and branding. You got a better deal though.
