My mate used to have an Alfa 164. Had a gearbox problem and they said the parts would take 6 weeks but they could do a gearbox pretty much straight away, so it cost him £2000... he fell out of love with it after that.

I had an Alfetta 2.0 from '84, traded it in on a Peugeot 205 GTI, but I couldn't operate the gear-box because all the synchromesh rings were gone.
So I put it in 2nd gear and drove home without shifting..as I didn't know then how-to double-clutch.
Great looks with 15 inch Ronals but technically more like a lemon.
Sold it the next week to an Alfisti as it appeared to be a "Savali edition" (dealer Sam van Lingen in NL made some special edition Alfa's), who enjoyed working on it, adjusting the carburettors, polishing it a bit, drive slowly through town and so on...😁

Was hoping Alfa might make a Giulia Quadrifoglio estate, but looks like they're not going to.

Have a similar mate. Has always driven Alfas. Not only once he had to throw a broken exhaust into his car (several years ago!). His last Alfa is a dream: extremely red, black leather interior, music by Bose... But when the roof didn't close and the computer showed "A problem occurred" he really got angry. But he doesn't learn!!
He can afford it. His wife drives a Miata!!!

Alfa Romeo to return to F1 with Sauber
29 Nov 2017
The Sauber F1 Team have signed a multi-year technical and commercial partnership with Alfa Romeo, returning the Italian car manufacturer to F1 after an absence of more than 30 years.
The deal will see the Swiss squad renamed Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team from 2018, with the car bearing the Alfa Romeo logo and being equipped with 2018-spec Ferrari engines.

“This agreement with the Sauber F1 Team is a significant step in the reshaping of the Alfa Romeo brand, which will return to Formula 1 after an absence of more than 30 years,” said Ferrari chairman Sergio Marchionne, who also acts as CEO of Alf’s parent company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

“A storied marque that has helped make the history of this sport, Alfa Romeo will join other major automakers that participate in Formula 1. The brand itself will also benefit from the sharing of technology and strategic know-how with a partner of the Sauber F1 Team’s undisputed experience.

“The Alfa Romeo engineers and technicians, who have already demonstrated their capabilities with the newly-launched models, Giulia and Stelvio, will have the opportunity to make that experience available to the Sauber F1 Team. At the same time, Alfa Romeo fans will once again have the opportunity to support an automaker that is determined to begin writing an exciting new chapter in its unique, legendary sporting history.”

Pascal Picci, Chairman of Sauber Holding AG, added: “We are very pleased to welcome Alfa Romeo to the Sauber F1 Team. Alfa Romeo has a long history of success in Grand Prix racing, and we are very proud that this internationally renowned company has chosen to work with us for its return to the pinnacle of motorsport.

“Working closely with a car manufacturer is a great opportunity for the Sauber Group to further develop its technology and engineering projects. We are confident that together we can bring the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team great success, and look forward to a long and successful partnership.”

Alfa Romeo was the dominant force as the Formula 1 World Championship began in 1950, with the Italian marque claiming an historic 1-2-3 in the first ever race at Silverstone before claiming back-to-back world championships with Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio.

The Milan-based marque then served an engine supplier for several teams from 1961 until 1979, before returning with a works team from 1979 to 1985.

Sauber have not yet revealed who will race for them in 2018, but having strengthened their ties with Ferrari - which carries Alfa logos on its cars - the Scuderia’s junior drivers Charles Leclerc (the recently crowned F2 champion) and Antonio Giovinazzi are thought to be firmly in the frame for seats.

We're hearing stories about the Giulia reliability, and not so pleasant ones.

Will the engine turn out to be a rebranded Ferrari? Could be a marketing coup for AR bringing the name once more to the fore.

That is exactly what it will be. But will it be the same spec?
The engine will have to be of a competitive spec otherwise it will do Alfa no good to be classed as an also ran?

Alfa Romeo you say?

I had this 3-door 147 back in 2002...lovely car

Then I thought if my watches were vintage, maybe my car should be too? Next was this 1971 1750 GTV bought sight unseen from a farm where the original owner hadn't used it in close to a decade. He wanted $6500, but I think I got him down to $6000. Admittedly, the photo you see below is after it was stripped back to bare metal and re-painted...which cost a lot more than $6k 😉

In 2010 I went for a 159 ti..

..and then earlier this year, another 147, this time the facelift model...not as nice as the original design

Loved them all...and never had a single issue on the newer ones..the old GTV had a few issues, but nothing major

I love my Alfas. Had several but nothing modern I’d want perhaps a 4c Spider for blasting up the Welsh mountains.

I only have the one now, my Series 4 Giulia Spider.

Pictured yesterday for the bi-annual Insurance valuation shots. Done c2500 miles in exactly two years.

They say that’s what the Stelvio is for. Trouble is, unlike the German marques, Alfa simply don’t have the money or reputation to have a full range of cars.
