Had the budget been enough, I would have suggested a 5270G...
Otherwise, a 5960P would work as well. Depends on your dads taste

David Duggan watches was recommended to me by Mappin & Webb when I was looking for an obsolete VC so I guess they must have a good reputation.
https://www.daviddugganwatches.co.uk/preowned-luxury-watches/patek-philippe/

They've been around a long time, and David has access to things other might only dare to dream of... a couple of the Time 4A Pint regulars have done business with him, and reported good things.

@roryoc11 I'd be tempted to start by getting your Dad into a Patek boutique, trying on modern models, and then working out where to go from there. The folks in the Bond Street Main Boutique have been very friendly and helpful... and that's in full knowledge that I can't afford their watches.

Sooner or later one of us had to suggest a Speedmaster, just because it's what we do.
However if we have to be restricted to just Pateks, then how 'bout a 5070 in whatever metal he chooses?
Anybody know what fabulous movement powers this iconic dress chrono 😉

Seriously Miki? 😒 😡 You're one of the last people I'd think would ruin a high end thread with that repetitive asinine suggestion! 😵‍💫 🙄

I'm going back into hibernation..... 🙁 🤦

I was wondering if other members have bought PPs second hand, and if so was it through a dealer / private sale / auction? Most of the private sales I have seen on watchrecon tend to be in the US ( we are UK based).

Hey Rory,
I own 2 PP's. Both were bought pre-owned, one from a well-known dealer (SDwatches), the other from a close friend and fellow WIS. My caveats buying a PP from someone other than friends would be (a) buy the seller (b) ask for B&P always.

I second@MikiJ 's suggestion about AL&S. The 40mm 1815 would be perfect for your dad - the right size, the same (or in fact more) classy/dressy vibe as a PP Calatrava, and less obviously recognisable than a Patek. In fact, comparing pre-owned Calatrava & 1815 prices, the 1815s are about the same price, and the finishing is better on a AL&S 1815 vs the PP calatravas.

If your buying a PP you want the whole experience in my book.

Get him in a boutique and let him enjoy the whole thing of picking one out and choice of what he likes and doesn't.
Just looking for what dealers have limits he's pick and adds to getting a fake or franken
PP is not the type of watch you look for a deal on.

Bringing Dad to a Patek Boutique is like bringing a kid to a candy store, he'll want one of each 😀

A speedmaster was the first thing I suggested! I thought he could look after a nice Ed, ploprof or pepsi GMT for me for a few years.

@NT931 thanks for the suggestions- I'll keep an eye out with SD.

@ulackfocus Just had a look at Govbergs - they have a great selection.

@tyrantlizardrex Thanks for the reccomendation Chris- its good to know that others have bought from there, ill take a look there this week. I wouldn't have thought to look at Burlington Arcade from my omega centric view.

To appease you for bemusing you with my dad's strange wants - some pictures (finally) of the shortlist to hunt:

The 5396G

The 5270G

The 5170G

Very nice watches. Are you based in EU or USA?

You need to decide on the model that you want first of all.

Then look at the prices in the secondary market - chrono24 is a good starting point.

Finally you need to find a dealer that is willing to do you a deal on a watch as well as process your VAT without any administration charges (the larger chains such as WofS charge an admin fee of a few hundred pounds - this is paid to a third party such as Global Blue).

Once you have worked out the best price in the grey / used market you can compare this to the new price and make your decision.

I personally prefer to by watches that havent been discontinued brand new.

As for the interest free - you should only take that if you need the finance. its much better to pay upfront and get the VAT refund plus any discount you can negotiate

Did you miss the post where he said they'd bought a watch?

Well that’s one hell of a first watch! Skipped the Swatch and went right to PP - good man! Hope he enjoys and wears it in good health.
