A present to my father

I applaud your sentiment in wanting to buy your father something special. As a sometime watch fancier during his life, I imagine he has particular likes and dislikes (as we all do). You might therefore want to consider taking him with you to choose for himself - it would be a shame if you surprised him with something he did not subsequently wear.

I understand that you might have trouble getting him to accept the gift, but if it were me I would push him to be part of it on the grounds I was going to buy him a new watch whether he came or not. Once he is in the store he would be hooked.

I wanted to give him a Calatrava because he has a Baume & Mercier that's exactly like the Calatrava I posted the link and he always joked saying that many times when he wears the watch people think it's a PP but it's only a BM xD and he wears that watch on a constant basis.

If i were your dad, i would appreciate the Calatrava. Wear it exclusively till I die. And bequeath it to my grandson.
Since we live in a dangerous country he wouldn't wear it every day, just like he doesn't wear his Rolex every day, but I do hope he enjoys it.

I assume he would prefer WG to RG

timeless....btw wonderful gesture for what I am certain is a wonderful man

Since the BM I spoke of earlier is RG I was thinking on getting the Calatrava RG due to the small story I shared up here, but I might consider this WG as well, I'll ask for videos from the AD, thank you for the suggestion

I have unfortunate news =/, contacted the AD and the model that I saw on Jomashop with the retail price of 20k USD, over here they're selling for 25k USD due to taxes and that price is including the discount, the first price offered to me was at 30k USD, no wonder they're not selling.

I'll continue my search for another brand, if anyone has any ideas please post them here.

How about JLC Master Ultra Thin with seconds? And it's within your price range?

My wrist is 6" and got the 2013 JLC MUT and it's 38mm. Not too big. I know you had said no bigger than 36mm.

I think you should try to find a second hand watch, this way you will not take a hit on depreciation.
I am sure there must be some very nice Calatravas out there in your budget.
A quick search on Chrono24 shows 1,700+ hits with some lovely BNIB models such as the 5196R for just shy of 20k$...

If I recall correctly, he will be hit with an enormous import duty in Brazil. Here are some threads that may provide new ideas:

Fair enough Dan.... unless they travel to the USA!! 😉
But I also fully agree, plenty of other fish in the ocean... 👍
We spent 20 days in Orlando and just came back on the 11th around a week ago =/ so we won't be going back to the USA any time soon, only around January of next year.

I'm not worrying about depreciation because knowing my father he would never sell the watch, and I wanted his name to be on the certificate of the watch, but thank you for the idea.

Thanks. I don't think the JLC Master Ultra Thin series comes below 39mm. The case is very thin. Therefore, the 39mm may not look that big 😉

Whatever you end up getting, your father will love it. He has raised a very thoughtful son.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, called the AD and got a really good price for it, will do some more research but I think I might give him the JLC Ultra Thin with the moonphase and a black dial.

Most people when they get to age 70 aren't all that fussed about something like an expensive watch. Have you talked to him about it?
We went through the same thing with my dad when he turned 70 (this past fall).

For his 60th we got him a like new in box Omega SHOM/200M from the early 70's. He was over the moon excited about it (not sure I've ever heard my dad say "holy sh!t" so many times whilst at a nice restaurant). It slid in nicely to his collection of mostly vintage Seamasters.

But for his 70th he simply said "nah, I'm good. I don't want anything".

So instead I simply stole that SHOM from him, sent it in to Omega and had them do an overhaul on it. Came back gorgeous as ever and keeping excellent time. My dad, once again, couldn't be happier.

Moral of the story, always better to ask. Us silly fools always think the N+1 formula applies to enjoying our watches but maybe it's better a function of just creating new memories wearing the watches we already own and love?

You're right, I'll try to slip that question in the next time we have lunch to see what's his answer.

My father had a 1974 Rolls Silver Shadow- it was his dream car and in 1974 he finally had the means to afford one. He drove that car daily and it was his pride and joy until he was involved in a head-on collision in it in 1986. He walked away with a broken nose and some cuts, the car was repaired despite it should have been a total loss- it never ran properly after that, was always in the shop- he finally had to sell it within a couple years- it broke his heart. He drove Benz’s for the rest of his life but he always looked twice when we saw another Rolls from the golden age.
My siblings and I always said that we would get him another one for his retirement gift- sadly he died at 63.
Maybe you should talk to him about “the one that got away” in his life- something he always wanted (or had), and regrets not fulfilling or having anymore.

I understand what you're saying, the thing is I already talked with him about getting him a Patek and he always said he would love it but the problem is that I'm doing some investments and around 20k USD is the max I could spend on something without compromising my investments, but thank you for your input.

Have you considered Cellini? too big?
I never really liked the Cellini, always found it quite "Meh" imo Rolex should focus on sports watches, but thank you for your input.

I'm going to give him the 36mm White gold bezel, jubilee bracelet and silver dial. Was going to give him one with the black dial but talking to him I discovered he doesn't like dark dials cause he can't see the time well on them xD, thank God I found that out before buying the black dial one!

You can find the Saxonia here: https://www.alange-soehne.com/en/timepieces/saxonia

Pink gold, 35mm = €15'200.

Thank you! I'll see if there's an Lange AD here in Brazil to see more videos of the watch.
